The campaign To Eliminate Mascots and Fruit with Arms from Advertising

Every year in my portfolio classes at Newhouse, I come across at least 10-15 "concepts" that involve adding arms and legs to a fruit vegetable or burrito, and every year I kill them.

What's wrong with mascots or dancing fruit? California Raisins, Fruit of the Loom guys? they are (were) very popular. True. But the problem I have is that it is a gimmick that is done to death. Its so "done" that anti-mascots have been created, like the Whopper Jr. family or the recent Nannerpus Pancake ad for Denny's. Its so common and annoying, we make fun of it.

For that reason, I am starting a channel on YouTube and am requesting your submissions.
Post your link in the comments below.

I found this by chance and I think he would agree with my disdain.

Ad of the year?
I’m serious.
Twice now, people I’ve been with have laughed OUT LOUD at these ads. The first time, it was Mrs Realmenwritelongcopy and I assumed her hormones were still imbalanced from recently giving birth. Then, on the way home last night, my friend saw a bus side with the same image of a mechanic and the line ‘Call our crack team’.
“Call our crack team!” he laughed, “Genius!”
Needless to say, neither of these people works in advertising. Surely this is yet another example of how hopelessly out of kilter our judgment is? Any Creative Director would laugh you out of his office for this pun-tastic eyesore. And yet there’s nothing the great British public loves more. We need to get with the program.

Kev,
What do you think bout the Weight Watchers Hungry monster? At first, I loved it because it was so different for the category. But the more I see it, the more I question its relevance. Only time will tell whether we have another Joe Isuzu on our hands: Memorable and entertaining, but completely ineffective to their bottom line.

See the Hungry monster here:
